I’m sure you are familiar with the biblical story of how King Herod tried to use the Magi to murder the baby Jesus. He feigned allegiance to Christ, his feared political rival, in hopes of fooling these religious leaders from the East into informing him about the baby’s whereabouts. Of course, the Magi were warned about Herod’s political intrigue by God and refused to betray Christ into the hands of the wicked King.

Perhaps, this is why we call them Wise Men. They refused to betray Christ in order to help some self-serving politician to obtain his selfish political ends. Unfortunately, as is proven by the meeting of evangelical leaders with Donald Trump this Tuesday in New York City, there are few “Wise Men” to be found among today’s religious leaders. Far from refusing to betray Christ, today’s evangelical leaders appear eager to do so in order to endorse one of America’s foremost egomaniacs and self-promoters for the presidency.

It pains me to see evangelical leaders being snookered into supporting a political huckster for the presidency by nothing more than a list of insincere pandering points and a parting pat on their heads. Yet, this is what today’s self-serving politicians have made of today’s religious leaders. We can’t blame the politicians, however, for this sorry state of affairs. It’s our own fault, for failing to demand truth, justice and righteousness, and settling instead for lesser evils between Christ rejecting candidates.

The Bible tells us that the Magi went home another way. Too bad today’s evangelical leaders don’t know another way to go than the dead end they’ve been traveling for years. We keep falling for the lies of lying politicians, while our country goes to hell in a hand basket. Still, we continue to foolishly believe that by betraying the truth to punch a ballot for another political ticket we will transform America and make our country great again.
