What does it say to you when the former star of the emergent church movement, Rob Bell, joins with spiritual ding-a-ling Oprah Winfrey to propagate spiritual nonsense to the gullible masses? Bell, who has espoused universalism and embraced same-sex marriage, is beginning his own show, “The Rob Bell Show,” on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) this month. Oprah, or as I like to call her, “Poperah,” has been preaching for years a generic spirituality that suggest all religions are equally valid paths to God. While promoting everything from Zen Buddhism’s karmic destiny to Hinduism’s reincarnation, “Poperah” has publicly denounced the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For instance, from the pulpit of her media empire she has declared to the world: “One of the biggest mistakes humans make is to believe there is only one way. Actually, there are many diverse paths leading to what you call God.”

Before being forced to admit that Bell’s spiritual clapper was broke over his departure from orthodoxy and embracing of apostasy, the contemporary church couldn’t get enough of Bell’s touchy-feely “Velvet Elvis” attempts to repaint Christianity. However, Bell’s attempts to portray himself as a chum of this Christ-rejecting world and as a critic of the evangelical church eventually painted him into a theological corner. Painted into a corner by the faintly brushed obtuse lines of his personal theology, Bell was finally forced to fly his true colors, which turned out to be a theological abstract draped in the rainbow bunting of the gay rights movement.

That the contemporary church is practically devoid of spiritual discernment and populated by biblical illiterates is proven by the fact that Oprah’s new cohort was recently the drum major of the emergent church movement and the darling of the contemporary church. How could such a wolf in sheep’s clothing not only slip into the flock undetected, but be mistaken for a trustworthy shepherd rather than an uncaring hireling caring only for himself?

Do you remember the Apostle Paul’s prediction that one of the characteristics of the “perilous times” of the last days would be “silly women” who “never come to a knowledge of the truth,” in spite of the fact that they are “ever learning” from those who daily “creep” into their houses (2 Timothy 3:1-7). Well, it looks like Rob Bell is joining with the other creepers on the Oprah Winfrey Network in daily creeping into the houses of silly people, who will “ever” be “learning” but “never come to the knowledge of the truth” by viewing programs like “The Rob Bell Show.” After all, no one will ever hear these words of Christ on the Oprah Winfrey Network: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
