I was thinking yesterday about how to explain the phenomenon of Christians in the tank for Trump. I believe it all boils down to the erroneous idea that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Our government has parlayed this phony philosophy into innumerable foreign policy disasters. For instance, we mistook Osama bin Ladin as our friend because he was a foe of our enemy, the Russians. However, we learned in the end, on 9/11, that bin Laden, our supposed friend, was far more fiendish than our Russian foes. Like our gullible government, Christians believe that Trump is our friend because he is the enemy of our enemy, Hillary Clinton. If Trump is elected president, thanks in no small part to so many Christians being in the tank for Trump, will his presidency prove to be a political 9/11 in America? You might argue that a Hillary Clinton presidency will certainly prove to be the equivalent of a political 9/11 for our nation; an argument, I might add, that I take no exception to whatsoever. Still, our enmity with Clinton doesn't justify our befriending of Trump anymore than our country's enmity with Russia justified our befriending of Osama bin Laden. Just as our buddying up to bin Laden resulted in billows of smoke going up from Manhattan for all the world to see, Christians going in the tank for Trump could result in our whole country going up in smoke.
