A week ago yesterday, on Sunday, January 5, comedian Nikki Glaser, who hosted Hollywood's Golden Globe Awards, mockingly joked that when it came to who award winners were thanking for their success, "God, Creator of the universe," had received "zero mentions." She then scoffingly added, "No surprise in this godless town." Two days later the Los Angeles fires broke out and two days after this Hollywood Hills was on fire. Now, I'm not saying that the L.A. fires are divine retribution directed specifically at Glaser's irreverent Golden Globe comments. After all, far more blasphemous things have been said by Hollywood celebrities. Take for an example comedian Kathy Griffin's 2007 Emmy award-winning acceptance speech, in which she sneeringly said: "A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus." Then Griffin blasphemously added, while holding up her statuette, "Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now." What I am saying, however, is what the Bible says: "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6:7). As Scripture makes clear, all natural disasters, like the L.A. fires, occur under divine sovereignty (Isaiah 45:7 ESV) and serve as megaphones to mockers, like Hollywood celebrities, to repent of their mockery before they forever perish (Luke 13:1-5).
