For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. (Psalm 91:11-12)

It is not a guardian angel, as most people fondly imagine, but all of God’s angels that are given “charge over” God’s elect. Along with this startling aspect of angelic protection pointed out to us by this astonishing psalm, there is also the amazing comprehensiveness of angelic protection. According to the Psalmist, angels are charged to keep us from “dashing our foot against a stone.” In other words, they keep us from stumping our toe. How consoling it is to know that angels are divinely charged to be so minutely and meticulously concerned with our daily care.

Another startling aspect of angelic protection found in this psalm is its constancy. At first glance, one may be taken back by the Psalmist’s promise of angelic protection “in all [our] ways.” Suppose we’re not going in the right way? Are angels charged by God to shield us from sin’s consequences? Can we live assured of angelic protection and with careless abandon outside of the parameters of God’s Word to us and God’s will for us? To answer these important questions and to prevent us from presuming that we’re chaperoned and cared for by the Heavenly Host when straying down some sinful side road, we need to pause here to remember to whom the promises of this psalm are promised.

The phenomenal promises of this magnificent psalm are not all-inclusive, but most exclusive, promised only to those who “dwell in the secret place of the most High” and “abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” In other words, they are the lone purview of those who live in around-the-clock communion with God. To live in such continuous intimacy with the Almighty necessitates consistent obedience to Him. Therefore, it is only those who are faithful to God and in fellowship with God who are promised by God comprehensive and constant daily care by divinely-charged angels.

God only knows the times my life was threatened just today.

A reckless car ran out of gas before it ran my way.

Near misses all around me, accidents unknown,

Though I never see with human eyes the hands that lead me home.

But I know they’re all around me all day and through the night.

When the enemy is closing in, I know sometimes they fight

To keep my feet from falling, I’ll never turn away.

If you’re asking what’s protecting me then you’re gonna hear me say:

I got his angels watching over me, every move I make.

Angels watching over me!

I got angels watching over me, every step I take.

Angels watching over me!
