The 20th Anniversary of the Chernobly Nuclear Disaster

Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, a catastrophe often called the worst manmade disaster in history. When the Soviet Union’s nuclear power plant in Chernobyl blew the lid off of one of its reactors, fifty tons of radioactive material bellowed into the atmosphere. Although only 32 deaths were reported initially, subsequent deaths have numbered in the thousands, not to mention the millions of acres of farmland and forest that have been contaminated.
Writing about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Pyotr Romanov, a political commentator for the Russian News and Information Agency, penned the following:
“I think it was Chernobyl that exploded the U.S.S.R.…The tragedy was not just about radioactive contamination. It produced a huge pack of lies, which shocked the Soviet people…in blissful ignorance, children and adults were walking under the genial spring rain in Kiev and Minsk, eating fruit, fishing, going to Ukrainian and Byelorussian resorts. If they had known the truth, they would have been running away…
Important, the liars were the party reformers whom many people had trusted when they said the Soviet system could be reformed. After this lie there was nobody to believe…The lie proved to be as deadly as radiation.”
Thinking on Romanov’s comments about Chernobyl, I can’t help but compare today’s Americans to the Soviet people and our politicians to those lying party reformers. Is it not true that today’s Americans walk around in “blissful ignorance,” due to the “huge pack of lies” produced by our politicians? If we only knew the truth about the national debt, Social Security, illegal immigration, “peaceful” Islam, the ACLU, radical feminism, the United Nations, the gay agenda, add infinitum, we would all be “running away.”
According to Romanov, once the truth came out about Chernobyl the Soviet Union “exploded.” Likewise, America will explode if the truth ever comes out. This explains why our politicians are always working feverishly to keep the lid on the truth. They know if the lid ever blows in this country that even the blowing of Chernobyl’s lid will pale in comparison.
