TODAY'S DEVOTION ON THE BIBLE

Although Christians claim to believe the Bible is God's Word, a recent survey shows that 40% of regular churchgoers read the Bible no more than once or twice a month. Furthermore, one out of five churchgoers admit that they never read the Bible at all. As a result of not reading the Bible, the average churchgoer today does not know the Bible. For instance, one out of five churchgoers believe that there are many ways to Heaven and one out of three believe that Harry Potter is a biblical story.

Biblical illiteracy among the world’s unbelievers and Bible bashers comes as no surprise. No one should be shocked to learn that millions of Americans believe Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife and Sodom and Gomorrah were a married couple. What is most disconcerting, however, is the biblical illiteracy found among the contemporary church’s professed Bible believers. If today’s Christians don't know sound doctrine nor understand what they believe, how can they defend their faith or answer questions about it, as the Bible clearly admonishes Christians to do (1 Peter 3:15, Jude 3)? Obviously, a faith we cannot define is a faith we cannot defend. Indeed, we won’t even be able to determine when it is under attack.
