“And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.” (Mark 15:3-5)

Since His innocence was unquestionable, even Pilate was forced to admit, “I find no fault in Him,” WHY WAS JESUS SILENT? 

Since His ability to defend Himself was unparalleled, remember what the temple police said of Him, “Never man spoke like this man,” WHY WAS JESUS SILENT? 

Since the charges brought against him were totally unfounded, the Bible says, “It was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up,” WHY WAS JESUS SILENT? 

And since His accusers and judges were anything but unrenowned—Annas and Caiaphas (the High Priests of Israel), the Sanhedrin (the Jewish Supreme Court), Pontius Pilate (the Roman governor of Judea), and Herod Antipas (the king of Judea)—one cannot help but marvel with Pilate at the silence of the Master before His false accusers.

Perhaps, one explanation for the silence of Christ is that the case against Him was so weak that it required no defense. Why should Christ have dignified such spurious accusations with an answer? 

To this day, Christ remains silent in the face of spurious human accusations, refusing to dignify them with a divine reply. Men may mock, rant, rave and rail at the Almighty, but the heavens will remain silent, until they are split by the returning Christ in power and glory. At that time, our Lord’s accusers will be forever silenced. Until then, Christ has absolutely no obligation to answer to man or to defend Himself against human accusations.

Although all men will ultimately give account of themselves to Christ, the infinite Christ is under no compulsion to defend Himself against the spurious charges of finite men. If you dare to think that God owes you an answer for anything; you’ve got another thing coming, for it is you who will ultimately answer to God for everything. 

“Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31)
