APRIL FOOLS

Who Does the Bible Call a Fool?
1 Apr 2006

The origin of April Fools’ Day is unknown. Many believe that it originated in France. Can you imagine that? According to tradition, in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered the Gregorian Calendar to replace the old Julian Calendar; consequently, New Year's Day was moved from April 1 to January 1. Afterward, due to their ignorance of France’s new calendar, many Frenchmen continued to celebrate April 1 as New Year’s Day. This foolishness on their part earned them the moniker “April Fools.”

I don’t know how many “April Fools” could be found on April 1 in fourteenth century France. What I do know, however, is that there is no shortage of fools in the world today. Today’s fools, unlike France’s April Fools, are easily found on everyday of the year.

According to the Bible, the following are some of the prevalent fools in our present-day world.

(1) Atheists (Psalm 14:1; 53:1)

(2) Slanderers (Proverbs 10:18)

(3) Meddlers (Proverbs 20:3)

(4) Know-it-alls (Proverbs 12:15; 28:26)

(5) Hotheads (Proverbs 12:16; 27:3; 29:11; Ecclesiastes 7:9)

(6) Sluggards (Ecclesiastes 4:5)

(7) Blabbermouths (Ecclesiastes 5:3; 10:12-14)

(8) Money-grubbers (Jeremiah 17:11)

(9) Materialists (Luke 12:13-21)

(10) Blasphemers (Psalm 74:18)

(11) Loudmouths (Proverbs 9:13)

(12) Brats (Proverbs 15:5, 20)

(13) Spendthrifts (Proverbs 21:20)

(14) Unbelievers (Matthew 7:26-27)

(15) Hypocrites (Matthew 23:15-17; 25:1-13)
