Seeking Stardom or Singing for the Bright and Morning Star?
20 Aug 2005

The Gospel Music Channel, America’s first twenty-four-hour Christian music network, has announced its new nationally-televised talent search—Gospel Dream 2005. According to Brad Siegel, the network’s vice chairman, Gospel Dream is “American Idol for the gospel set.” Twenty-one hopeful stars will be selected from regional auditions to compete in the national finals to be aired from Atlanta on November 30 (semi-finals) and December 1 (finale). The winner will not only have a chance to perform on national television, but stands a good chance of being signed by a major record label.

Unfortunately, today’s Christians are incessantly imitating the world and becoming more and more indistinguishable from it. Whereas gospel music is supposed to be peculiar—inspiring and resulting in the praise of the Savior and the furtherance of His cause—it has become worldly—entertaining and resulting in the praise of the singer and the furtherance of his or her career. Although Gospel Dream 2005 may result in America finding its next great gospel recording star, it won’t result in America finding what it really needs, “the bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16).
