HOLLYWOOD > SHAKING A SQUEAKY-CLEAN IMAGE

Decency - The Death Knell to Hollywood Careers
22 Sep 2005

Comedian Bob Saget is appearing this weekend at Tampa’s Improv. According to the Tampa Tribune, a surprise awaits those who attend, especially those who “fondly recall [Saget] as the dad on ‘Full House’ or as the host of ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos.’” Saget’s comedy, the Tribune warns, “can be raunchy.”

Speaking of his comedy act, Saget says, “I like the sickest stuff, but because I worked on two wholesome TV shows people have this image of me as squeaky clean.” In spite of repeated attempts at shaking his wholesome image, such as an adult comedy special on HBO, Saget was unable to do so until he told his “X-rated joke [in] the one-dirty-joke-premise movie ‘The Aristocrats.’” Thanks to the surprising success of this movie, Saget is suddenly in demand on college campuses and at comedy clubs. As he puts it, “I’m getting a second career because of a dirty joke.”

Saget is not the first Hollywood celebrity to bemoan his squeaky-clean image. Many others have attributed their career’s demise to being perceived by the public as a goody two-shoes. Just think about it, a reputation for decency is something Hollywood avoids like the plague. Believing any appearance of virtue on their part to be the death knell to their career, Hollywood celebrities continuously go out of their way to convince us all of their wantonness.

I don’t know about you, but as far as I’m concerned, Hollywood need not work so hard to convince me of its decadence. I’m convinced! Take cheer Bob Saget, I’m persuaded that you’re a degenerate.
