ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION > ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Our Bizarre Border Crossings
28 Sep 2005

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, most politicians are far more concerned about their job security than they are about homeland security. This explains why they refuse to confront the growing problem of illegal immigration. Since Hispanics have replaced African Americans as the largest minority in America, both political parties—Democrats and Republicans—believe their future success at the ballot box is dependent upon winning the Hispanic vote. With Hispanics making up the vast majority of illegal immigrants, our politicians are not about to address the problem of illegal immigration for fear of offending Hispanic voters.

While America welcomes all legal immigrants to our shores, illegal immigrants are a horse of a different color. If our immigration laws are not going to be enforced and illegal immigrants are going to be given the same treatment and benefits as legal immigrants, then illegal immigration will become the preferential way for foreigners to enter our country. In fact, a study released yesterday by the Pew Hispanic Center suggests that it already has. According to the study, more illegal immigrants (562,000) than legal immigrants (455,000) entered our country last year.

The reluctance of our politicians to address the burgeoning problem of illegal immigration poses a serious threat to our national security. This is true not only because of the myriad of problems illegal immigration creates for our country, but also because of the fact that our borders are becoming revolving doors for would-be terrorists. Anyone doubting the ease with which a terrorist could cross our borders and enter our land can be easily convinced otherwise by considering the case of Gregory Despres.

After supposedly murdering his neighbors and decapitated one of their corpses, Gregory Despres left his hometown of Minto, New Brunswick and arrived at the U.S-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine on April 25 of this year. Despite the fact that he was carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles, and a chain saw stained with what appeared to be blood, U.S. customs agents permitted Despres to enter the U.S. A short two days later, on April 27, Despres was arrested for the murders of his Canadian neighbors by Massachusetts’ police who saw him walking down a highway in a sweat shirt with red and brown stains. When asked how such a despicable character was able to cross our border, Bill Anthony, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, explained, “Being bizarre is not a reason to keep somebody out of this country.”

Now that you know the bang-up job being done to protect our borders by politicians and customs agents, I wonder how well you’ll sleep tonight.
