"Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead."
9 Jun 2006
Jesus warned His disciples that those who lived by the sword would die by the sword (Matthew 26:52). Yesterday, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a man who lived by the bomb, ended up dying by the bomb. I must confess that I feel no sorrow over ole Abu’s demise. I do feel an irresistible urge, however, to break out in a rousing chorus of “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead.” Although some may think my feelings inappropriate for a Christian, the Bible plainly teaches that there are some people who just shouldn’t be around; and believe you me, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was definitely one of them.
In Genesis 9:6, God says, “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed.” Anyone without regard for the sanctity of human life is someone that shouldn’t be around. Whereas men often use the sanctity of human life as an argument against capital punishment, the Bible teaches that it is actually the reason for it.
Why should murderers be executed? Is it to bring back their victims or to deter crime? No! It is to keep them from ever murdering again. Far from violating the sanctity of human life, capital punishment actually protects it by eliminating all with a calloused disregard for it.
Did you know that al-Zarqawi’s native Jordan twice arrested and imprisoned him, and even once sentenced him to death? Unfortunately, the Jordanians released al-Zarqawi from prison both times and never carried out his death sentence. The rest is history. Just think of all of the innocent lives that would have been spared if the Jordanians had not spared al-Zarqawi.
The next time you hear some bleeding-heart begging for leniency to be shown to some bloodthirsty murderer, just remember Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who just may be the world’s best argument for capital punishment. And when you do remember al-Zarqawi, it’s okay to sing “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead.” Yes, even if you’re a Christian.
