The Gay Agenda Trumps the Needs of Homeless and Handicapped Children
21 Mar 2006
As Christians, we are often accused of attempting to force our faith and morals on others. Of course, such an accusation is totally unfounded and predicated on nothing more than our refusal to compromise our convictions and conform to today’s politically correct crowd. What is really happening today is the exact opposite of what is being popularly alleged. It is not us who are attempting to force our faith and morals on others, but others who are attempting to force their faithlessness and immorality on us. Take for example recent events in Massachusetts.
For more than 100 years Catholic Charities has placed 80% of Massachusetts’ handicapped orphans in good homes. It has also handled state adoptions for the past two decades. Yet, due to the gay activists’ charge that the Catholic Church is in violation of state anti-discrimination laws over its refusal to place children in the homes of homosexuals, Catholic Charities has been forced to cease its adoption operations in Massachusetts. Although gays may claim a political victory, the real loser in all of this is the homeless children of Massachusetts, especially those who are physically or mentally handicapped.
With homosexuals in Massachusetts able to adopt children from as many as 80 gay-friendly adoption agencies in the state, one cannot help but wonder why gays picked this fight with Catholic Charities. Obviously, needy children and religious freedom are not on the top of today’s homosexual agenda. Instead, all that matters to this radical bunch is the legalizing and legitimizing of their sexual perversion. If gays have to trample on needy children and people’s religious freedom to silence all dissenting voices and force their views on others, then so be it.
Senator Ted Kennedy, Massachusetts’ favorite son and paragon of virtue, has come out in condemnation of Catholic Charities’ ban on gay-adoption. Likewise, the Human Rights Campaign has condemned Catholic Charities in a news release entitled: “Boston Catholic Charities Puts Ugly Political Agenda Before Child Welfare.” It appears to me that the Human Rights Campaign has got its story backward. It is not Catholic Charities that has put its ugly political agenda before child welfare, but gays and lesbians who have done so. Still, the beat goes on and all who are assailed by homosexuals end up accused of assailing them.
Massachusetts’ Governor Mitt Romney has proposed legislation—“An Act Protecting Religious Freedom”—that would prevent the state from forcing religious institutions that provide adoption services from having to compromise their religious convictions. According to Romney, “It is a matter beyond dispute…that a government not dictate to religious institutions the moral principles by which they are to carry out their charitable and divine mission.”
We should definitely keep our eye on whether or not Governor Romney’s bill is passed by the liberal state legislature of Massachusetts. If it fails, and the Catholic Church in Massachusetts is forced to adhere to state adoption laws that are in violation of the church’s tenets, then what is to prevent your state from forcing your church to adhere to some state law that is in violation of your church’s tenets? For example, what is to prevent your state from passing anti-discrimination laws that jeopardize your church’s tax-exemption for refusing to accept homosexual members and conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies?
