WINKING AT SIN

Our National Eyesight Grows Dimmer And Dimmer
17 Jun 2006

God rejected the house of Eli, Israel’s High Priest at Shiloh, because Eli tolerated the atrocious sins of his wicked sons, Hophni and Phinehas (1 Samuel 3:11-14). Interestingly, the Bible says that Eli’s eyesight began “to wax dim” about the same time he began winking at the sins of his sons. The more he winked at his sons’ sins the blinder Eli became until finally “he could not see” at all (1 Samuel 4:15).

Winking at sin always dims one’s spiritual vision. If sin is winked at too long one runs the risk of becoming spiritually blind. As Alexander Pope pointed out:

“Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,

As to, be hated, needs but to be seen;

Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face,

We first endure, then pity, then embrace.”

According to recent polls, America’s opinion about homosexuality is dramatically shifting. Whereas 73% of Americans saw it as wrong in 1973, only 58% see it as wrong today. In 1996, 65% of America opposed same-sex marriage; today, only a bare majority (51%) is against it. In addition, and perhaps most troubling of all, 49% of Americans now favor gay adoption; this, compared to only 14% in 1977.

Obviously, many Americans can no longer see anything wrong with homosexuality or same-sex marriage. Our national eyesight grows dimmer and dimmer as we wink at sin more and more. We are increasingly at risk of becoming a spiritually blind nation that can see nothing at all. Can you see it?
