TODAY'S DEVOTION ON THE BIBLE

According to evangelical pastors, doubts about one’s salvation is one of the main reasons church members seek pastoral counseling. Why is doubting one’s salvation so prevalent among contemporary Christians? Is it not because so many base their assurance of salvation upon their feelings?

Feelings are a fickle thing. Sometimes you may feel like a Christian; sometimes you may not. Feelings come and feelings go. They ebb and flow. Sometimes you feel like you’re on top of the world and at other times you feel like the weight of the world is on you.

Fickle feelings should be the caboose of the Christian life, never its engine. While we can’t help but have feelings, both good and bad, as well as acute and apathetic, we should never base the assurance of our salvation on something so shaky and shifting. Instead, we should base the assurance of our salvation on the Bible, God’s sure and certain Word. We can know we are Christians because the Bible says so, not because we always feel like it.
