TODAY'S DEVOTION ON THE BIBLE
As we’ve already pointed out in a previous post, the King James Version of the Bible was not the first, but the tenth English translation of the Bible. Furthermore, the King James Bible was originally intended for the most part to be a revision of the Bishops’ Bible. The Bishops’ Bible was the official Bible of the Church of England. It was an English translation by Bishops in the Church of England intended to counter the Puritans’ preferred Geneva Bible, which was an English translation by Protestant Reformers in Geneva.
One of the guidelines given to the King James translators was that they should follow and alter as little “as the truth of the original [languages] would permit” the “ordinary Bible read in church, commonly called the Bishops’ Bible.” In addition, the King James translators professed that they relied upon the Roman Catholic Douay Bible to aid them in their work.
