TODAY'S DEVOTION ON THE BIBLE

It was, according to the King James translators, the “innocence of a good conscience” and the knowledge of “having walked the way of simplicity and integrity before the Lord” that sustained them in their “honest and Christian endeavor against bitter censures and uncharitable imputations.” They believed that “zeal,” like theirs, to promote the common good” deserved people’s “respect and esteem.” However, they acknowledged that such was not usually the case. Instead, such zeal to promote the common good normally “finds but cold entertainment in the world.”

They went on to lament how their work was “welcomed with suspicion instead of love, and with emulation instead of thanks.” It was both “misconstrued” and “condemned.” Yet, they had been aware all along that any project “that savored anyway of newness or renewing” would have to endure “many a storm of gain-saying” and “opposition.”
